Tenaga now proud owner of 12 titles

By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional are now the indisputed No. 1 hockey team in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL).
On Friday, they beat Sapura 4-2 in a penalty shootout at the Tun Razak Stadium here to become overall champions for a record seventh time since the MHL’s inception in 1985.
Having also landed the league crown five times, Tenaga are now the proud owners of 12 titles in the MHL.
On Friday, Tenaga also scooped up three of the four individual titles.
Penalty corner flicker Mohd Amin Rahim was the top scorer with 15 goals; defender Baljit Singh Charun was named the best player of the tournament; and S. Kumar was voted as the best goalkeeper.
Tenaga also picked up the Fairplay award while Sapura skipper S. Kuhan was named man of the match in the final.
Tenaga coach Manjit Singh attributed their success to the way “we take care of our players’ welfare”.
“The players we hire also work for Tenaga ... that is why the players are dedicated and give their best in the MHL,” said Manjit.
He also praised the five new players they roped in last year, saying “they have really played exceptionally well in the league”.
Tenaga hired national player Faisal Saari, former national juniors Mohd Nor Hafiq Abdul Gaffar and Izwan Firdaus as well as Mohd Jamil Saidin and Shazril Irwan Nazli.
“We had a mix of experienced and young players and we were confident of doing much better in the MHL this season.”
Manjit also welcomed the idea of holding league matches at different venues in Penang, Malacca and Johor Baru, saying it was a good way to promote hockey in the country.
He also hailed the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) for getting some of the matches aired live on television.
But he also had some grouses.
“I am against teams playing two matches in two days. I feel that to get quality matches, teams need to have at least one day’s rest in between,” said Manjit.
“In 2008, matches were played on Fridays and Sundays but this season matches were played on Fridays and Saturdays.
“I think the MHF need to look into the matter,” said Manjit.
Meanwhile, league champions Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club coach R. Vivekanandan has shouldered the blame for his team’s failure to bag the double.
“We were the favourites based on the number of national players in the team but my players failed to live up to expectations in the semi-final against Sapura,” said Vivekanandan, who is coaching for the first time in the MHL.
Sapura, who finished fourth in the Premier Division, upset KLHC 5-3 on aggregate to reach the final.
Sapura and Maybank team managers Abdullah Yunus and Abdul Rahim Musa both agreed that the league was well organised by MHF.
“We are happy with MHF for the good work they have done to make the MHL a success, especially by showing live matches and also having matches played in different states.”

Perhitungan akhir TNB, Sapura

Tenaga’s Amin: Overall title is more important than winning top scorer award

By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: National defender Mohd Amin Rahim and national forward Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin are in the running for the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) top scorer award.
The 30-year-old Amin, who plays for Tenaga Nasional, is the leading scorer on 14 goals, all from the penalty corner. Tengku Ahmad of the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) is one goal behind on the list.
Amin is in line to win the award for a second time. He was the top scorer for Ernst and Young with 30 goals in 2006. The following year, he joined Tenaga and they emerge as the overall champions by defeating Ernst and Young in the final.
Tenaga will play against Sapura for the overall title at the Tun Razak Stadium tomorrow. And KLHC will take on Maybank in the playoff for third place at the same venue.
Close encounter: KLHC’s Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin (right) and Tenaga’s Mohd Amin Rahim tussle for the ball during their Premier Division league match. The duo are in the running for the MHL top scorer award.
Amin said that winning the top scorer award was a secondary matter.
“What is most important to me is to help Tenaga win the overall title. We failed to become the league (Premier Division) champions and we definitely will go all out to win the overall title,” he said.
He added that the pressure would be on them to win the title, especially after having beaten Sapura twice in the league competition.
“Sapura are all fired up following the victory over Premier Division champions KLHC in the semi-finals.
It will be 50-50 chances as Sapura have some very experience players,” said Amin, who has scored six goals in the knockout stage.
He scored four goals in the quarter-final tie against Division One champions UiTM – a brace in both the first and second leg matches. In the semi-finals against Mayback, Amin scored a goal in both legs.
Amin said that Tenaga would again bank on him to deliver the goods in the final.
“I have a heavy responsibility, not only to marshal the defence but also to convert the penalty corners,” he said.
The 24-year-old Tengku Ahmad said that he would be out to get the goals to help KLHC win the playoff for third place.
“We have so many national players in the team and it is a big disappointment that we are not featuring in the final. I hope I will find some consolation by winning a first top scorer award,” said Tengku Ahmad, who made his debut in the MHL in 2006.

2 rakan berbogel ditipu ‘bomoh remaja’

Bagaimanapun, mangsa tetap membuat laporan polis.

Draws put Tenaga Nasional and Sapura in final for overall crown

Draws put Tenaga Nasional and Sapura in final for overall crown

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional and Sapura will meet in the final for the overall title of the Malaysia Hockey League after securing draws in the second-leg semi-final matches at the Tun Razak Stadium here yesterday.
Tenaga qualified on a 4-3 aggregate after drawing with Maybank 2-2 in an early game yesterday.
Then Sapura went into their semi-final match against Premier Division champions Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) with a 4-2 cushion from the first leg and they were forced to play a cautious game for a 1-1 result to walk into the final.
Sapura conceded seven penalty corners and still managed to defend well to deny KLHC an early lead.
The deadlock was broken in the 46th minute when KLHC’s Mohamed Shahrun Nabil turned in their eighth penalty corner rebound to keep his team in the fight for a berth in the final.

Thereafter, it was the tight defending marshalled by skipper S. Kuhan and Jiwa Mohan which kept KLHC at bay.
Sapura then put the issue beyond KLHC’s reach when Kuhan found the equaliser in the 63rd minute from their first penalty corner of the match to restore their two-goal advantage and a place in the final.
This will be the first-ever final between Sapura and Tenaga in the MHL.
Tenaga were also finalists in 2007 and they won the title by beating Ernst and Young for the overall title.
For Tenaga, a draw yesterday was enough to take them into the final. And penalty corner specialist Mohamed Amin Rahim was their saviour when he scored the equaliser in the 50th minute after Maybank had taken a 2-1 lead.
Amin was also the scorer of the second goal in the first leg which gave Tenaga the 2-1 win.
Maybank started off aggressively in search of a win but it was Tenaga who took the lead in the first minute when Faizal Saari scored from a quick counter attack.
The Tigers fought back and Hafifihafiz Hanafi opened their scoring in the 14th minute through a field attempt.
In the 39th minute the Tigers went 2-1 up from a penalty corner goal by Mohamed Riduan Nasir to put them on level terms in the overall result.
But Tenaga’s Amin had the last say as he flicked home a penalty corner in the 50th minute to make it 2-2 and a place in the final.
Tenaga coach Manjit Singh said that they held the advantage with the first-leg win and thus were confident of making the final.
“Despite the early goal we did not play well in the first half as the players felt the heat. But we did manage to take advantage of the few chances and walked off with the draw. It is always difficult playing Maybank,” said Manjit.
Maybank rued their wasted chances from the penalty corners. They had four attempts and converted only one.
Maybank coach S. Vellapan said that they did not have a good flicker compared to Tenaga.
“But I am glad that the players made a fight of it and did not give up. The early goal did not rattle us and we even took the lead but we failed to hold on to it,” said Vellapan.
The final will be played at the Tun Razak Stadium on Feb 12
